During this Christmas vacation I started to become curious and dove into my mum’s drawers.  I asked her about all the bedlinen she has been keeping in them for so long.
 
I knew she had lots of her old sheets as well as my grandmother’s that she doesn’t use anymore. I had always liked them but I never talked about them with her.
She told me she started to embroider all this linens when she was still a kid. A woman from the neighborhood taught her how to do it. The motifs are flowers, plants and some abstract forms inspired by the native flora. She did most of them with the old (not electric) sewing machine we still own and some of them were embroidered by hand.
 
This was traditional for young women to do, because all this bedlinen were to form part of their dowry and they also would be embroidered with the initials of the new family name composed by the first surname of the man and the first surname of the woman. In my case, Simó Ayuso.
 
She was forced to do it at night after work, lightened by an oil lamp. She remembers it with a hint of rebelliousness because she was not allowed to read my grandpa’s novels but she did it hiding the book on her lap under the table of the sewing machine.
